Investigation Unit 6.1

For the first part of Investigation, I have to undertake research into the work of my chosen practitioner. I have to first look at the life and creative development of the practitioner. In this, I will look at the whole of Tim Burton's career by describing how he first got into the film industry, the development of his work and how this led to his most recent films and made him choose to explore other areas of the media. I will then be looking into his working practices. This part of the research is more specific and it is in this that I will be researching into all his works in detail. The next step will be to look at Burton's use of materials, techniques and technologies that he applies to his work. This is more the break-down of his work and how he approaches each of his mediums, be it when he is in directing a moving image, creating stop-motion or writing poetry. Next I have to analyse the audiences for Burton's work. This generally refers to they type of demographic that views his work, so for example, the age of the audience that attends his films. The way his work is distributed is the next part of the unit I have to investigate, and it is quite self-explanatory. Here, I have to look into where his work has been shown, from his earlier work that was perhaps a more regional distribution to his more world-wide distribution with his latest work. Finally, I have to research the audience responses to his work. This will be the most interesting part of the unit for me to investigate, purely because Burton has such a distinctive and interesting style that perhaps some people will love and some people will hate. To me, Burton's work seems to be very controversial among movie-goers and so this will make an interesting part to my analysis.

Unit 6 Investigation

For Unit 6, which is entitled Investigation, I have to research the work of a practitioner of my choosing, who works in two or more mediums. I must use primary and secondary research to help put together an assessment of the practitioner and then talk about the methods they use in their work; before I finally critically analyze their practices.

After lengthy research into practitioners who work in two or more mediums, I have decided to use Tim Burton for this project. Tim Burton has worked in many mediums; film of course being his most obvious. But he has also worked in animation, television and also writes, and produces art. I am interested in Burton's work because he has a very distinct style that adds something extra to multimedia. He creates Victorian Gothic themes in the work he produces, but ironically presents them in a comedic and cheery way, as opposed to modern day Gothic, in which it seems that doesn't happen. It is because of this distinct style that I am interested in Burton's work, and therefore I am pleased to have chosen him for this project.
